How mangroves protect the Philippines from deadly storms

Tropical storms are a constant in the Philippines, and 2025 was no exception. Between September and November, a series of disasters – including Typhoon Tino and Super Typhoon Uwan – affected millions across the country, killing hundreds and displacing hundreds of thousands more. Coastal provinces were among the hardest hit as storm surges and flooding exposed long-standing vulnerabilities in both infrastructure and land use.
