CIFOR-ICRAF COUNTRY PROFILE: Malawi

Malawi is a long ribbon of a country that has been blessed with peace since independence in 1964 but challenged by low human development. In 2025, UNDP ranked it 172nd out of 193 countries globally, considerably behind the neighbours with which it was once federated under colonialism: today Zimbabwe ranks 153rd and Zambia 154th.
