This publication was produced by the independent Decision Support Unit (DSU) of the Land Facility Programme. Effective policy engagement can help move from political economy analysis to politically informed action. This resource illustrates how purposeful, creative and adaptive policy engagement approaches must be grounded in understanding of the political economy context. As these global examples show, the goals for influencing take many forms – whether it’s reframing a narrative, changing budget allocation or changing how individuals and institutions function. Navigating these complex and non-linear environments with effective engagement approaches depends on having a strong understanding of the political economy context, a clear set of influencing goals, and an agile and multidisciplinary project team.
Developed as an internal initiative by the Land Facility Decision Support Unit, the authors reviewed literature and practical resources on policy influencing and engagement from various sectors. They also compiled diverse examples of engagement approaches used across the world to influence different policy outcomes in various ways. This resource distils some common good practices, tips and tactics and interesting case studies to inspire more effective engagement and influencing efforts as part of a wider ‘Thinking and Working Politically’ approach.
