The Western Pacific Sustainable Peatland Management (SAGU) Project is a regional initiative implemented in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea from 2026 to 2030 to support the conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of peatland ecosystems in Borneo and New Guinea. The project seeks to halt or reduce peatland degradation and loss by strengthening peatland data and information systems for policy development, planning, monitoring, and restoration; expanding conservation education, outreach, and institutional capacity; and increasing community participation in the protection of intact peatlands and the restoration of degraded peatland landscapes. SAGU supports the implementation of regional and national priorities, including the ASEAN Peatland Management Strategy, National Action Plans on Peatlands, and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), contributing to climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable development, and improved ecosystem stewardship across the Western Pacific region.
