This project promotes the sustainable management of palm swamp peatlands in the Peruvian Amazon through community-based approaches that support biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and improved livelihoods. Led by CIFOR-ICRAF in partnership with national institutions and regional authorities, the initiative focuses on Mauritia flexuosa-dominated peatland forests, ecosystems that store significant amounts of carbon but are increasingly threatened by unsustainable harvesting practices. Activities include strengthening land tenure rights, enhancing technical capacities, developing community management plans, establishing local management associations and monitoring sustainable harvesting practices. The project also seeks to improve non-wood forest product value chains by identifying market opportunities, strengthening producer skills and supporting greater participation of local communities in sustainable markets. By integrating conservation, governance and livelihood objectives, the initiative contributes to the long-term protection and sustainable use of Amazonian peatland resources.
