Monitoring soil health in agroforestry system: a guide to assessment

This presentation introduces a harmonized framework for monitoring soil health in agroforestry systems developed within the DigitAF project. The guide aims to support consistent assessment of soil health across diverse agroforestry systems and Living Labs in Europe while accommodating the unique spatial complexity of agroforestry landscapes. It provides standardized indicators, sampling designs, analytical methods, and reporting procedures to generate comparable evidence on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and overall soil health. The framework focuses on a core set of indicators, including soil organic carbon and pH as chemical indicators, bulk density as a physical indicator, and earthworm abundance as a biological indicator. Recognizing the diversity of agroforestry systems, ranging from isolated trees and silvopastoral systems to row-based and area-based designs, the guide recommends tailored sampling approaches for each context. The methodology is intended to strengthen cross-site learning, improve carbon accounting, support monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) systems, and contribute to evidence-based assessments of agroforestry benefits for climate mitigation and sustainable land management across Europe.
