About CIFOR

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is a non-profit, scientific institution that conducts research on the most pressing challenges facing forests, landscapes and people around the world.

Founded in 1993 and headquartered in Bogor, Indonesia, CIFOR advances knowledge, policy and practice to support the sustainable management of forests and landscapes. Its work helps governments, communities, development partners, researchers, civil society and the private sector make informed decisions that improve human well-being, protect the environment and increase equity.

CIFOR is an independent International Organization and CGIAR Research Center. It is hosted by the Government of Indonesia and maintains its own legal identity, host country arrangements, contractual obligations, financial systems and operational responsibilities.

CIFOR and Landscape Alliance

CIFOR works in close strategic alignment with the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) under the shared operating name Landscape Alliance. Landscape Alliance reflects the joint ambition of CIFOR and ICRAF to transform science into action and unlock the power of trees, forests and agroforestry landscapes for planetary health and human well-being.

While CIFOR and ICRAF operate through a common strategy, shared governance and unified leadership arrangements, they remain distinct legal entities. The use of the Landscape Alliance name does not change CIFOR’s legal status, institutional mandate, host country relationship or operational commitments.

Our contribution

CIFOR brings globally recognized expertise in forests, climate, biodiversity, governance, restoration, sustainable land use and forest-dependent livelihoods. Its research supports evidence-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation and sustainable use, food and nutrition security, and secure and sustainable livelihoods.

Through long-term partnerships and applied research, CIFOR helps translate science into policy, investment and action across forested and tree-based landscapes. Its work supports national and local decision makers, strengthens inclusive governance, informs restoration and conservation strategies, and advances equitable approaches to landscape management.

Working for forests, people and the planet

Forests are living systems that regulate climate, sustain biodiversity, support livelihoods, protect water and soil, and contribute to food and nutrition security. CIFOR works to ensure that forests and landscapes are managed in ways that benefit both people and nature.

As part of Landscape Alliance, CIFOR contributes to a shared 2035 ambition: advancing measurable outcomes for climate resilience, biodiversity-positive land use, nutrition-sensitive food systems and inclusive livelihood transitions. Through science, partnerships and action, CIFOR continues to support a future where forests thrive, people prosper and nature flourishes.
